Living and Learning with Your Host Teacher and Family
Living with a host family gives you the opportunity to practice English in a friendly, stress free environment, while at the same time gain an insight into the way of life in your chosen destination.
The main advantage of living and studying in the teachers' home is that you have maximum exposure to the language each day. In contrast to studying at a typical school, with Live in Languages you are isolated from your own language and therefore there is no temptation to speak anything but English. In addition, you have the undivided attention of your personal teacher and there is no time wasted traveling to and from classes.
After your lessons, you are free to spend your time however you choose. Normally, lessons take place in the morning (Monday-Friday) which leaves the afternoon, evening and weekends free for family, social and cultural activities. You may choose to study, relax or tour the city. You will be oriented to your location by your teacher and given information about transportation, local attractions and events taking place during your stay that may interest you.
"I've never had such useful lessons for pronunciation before in Japan. I think the system of Live in Languages is very good because it's condensed in a very good way. In the morning, I can take very useful lessons. And then, I could go out to enjoy Seattle. And then I could enjoy talking with my teacher in the dinnertime." -- Fumio from Japan
Our Teachers
We take great care in selecting our host-teachers for their qualifications and experience, suitability as hosts, and pleasant guest accommodation. Our primary concern is to provide you with the most appropriate teacher and accommodation for your requirements and to design an academic program to meet your personal linguistic needs. By requesting a student profile prior to your course, we endeavor to recommend a host teacher with similar interests, background and professional standing for your approval.
We select teachers who provide only the highest standards in education and homestay. All of our teachers enjoy the experience of hosting a student in their home and appreciate the learning that takes place when a student both studies and learns in an environment where only English is spoken. Our teachers are qualified and experienced ESL teachers who have experience in one-to-one courses. They are flexible and will adapt lessons to meet your needs and interests and to resolve specific problems.
“Brenna is an excellent teacher. She made lesson plans according to my request. She encouraged me to speak out throughout my stay with patience.”

Full Board Accommodation
Your host family will provide a warm welcome and make every effort to ensure you are comfortable and will use the home as your own. You will be settled into your own bedroom and breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided by, and enjoyed with, your host teacher and family each day. You will find that meal times, as family occasions, are particularly valuable for developing spontaneous and natural communicative language.
Course Options
Students can choose 15, 20, or 25 lessons (50 minutes each) of one-to-one lessons each week. Most students choose to study a General English course but Business English and English for Special Purposes, such as law, medicine and aviation, are also available. English for First Certificate, Cambridge Advanced, Cambridge Proficiency and TOEFL qualifications can be studied on a four week program with the examination taken on the last day. If you have any special requests for particular lesson times, days, or a combination of locations, we will design a special program for you.
One-to-one Plus is specifically designed for senior executives and professionals who are accustomed to an exceptionally high standard of accommodation with private bathroom facilities. For friends or colleagues with similar levels of English who wish to share a host teacher, we also offer a two-to-one program at a reduced price.
You decide the length of your course but registrations must be made in weekly units. Typically, students arrive on any Sunday afternoon throughout the year and depart on any Saturday morning. Should these arrival/departure days prove difficult, we will endeavor to accommodate you at your convenience.
We accept students of all levels. Prior to your arrival, we ask that you take an English Evaluation Test. The results from this test allow us to better assess your current level of English and to choose the most appropriate learning materials for your course.
The most up-to-date educational materials are provided, which are yours to keep at the end of the course. You will also return home with a certificate and a detailed report completed by your teacher which includes comments on progress and suggestions for further study.
